Listening Through Clay

Ceramic sound instrument workshop for children
Ages 7–9*

Listening Through Clay introduces children to ceramics as a tactile and exploratory practice.

Working primarily with low-fire clay and natural slips made from locally sourced materials, students will learn foundational handbuilding techniques such as pinching, coiling, and shaping.

During these two weeks we will focus on creating a ceramic sound instrument; a pair of rattles; figurative, nature based or abstract, with the option of making a mango pit size ocarina.

During our time together we will build these instruments, learn to use slip, follow forms, and learn how to play our instruments.

*If your child is 6 turning soon 7 or 10 and they are really interested in learning instruments, music, sound, clay, they are welcome to the class. There is no cap in learning, this material is accesible to various ages all the way to 99!

About the Instructor

I am an experimental artist that has been making ceramic sound instruments for 6 years. I work primarily with low fire clay, and pre-columbian/indigenous ceramic techniques. I perform the instruments I teach and I believe that making sound instruments can be done at any age, and often the younger make the most amazing instruments.

As an educator, I create a space where children can learn through experimentation and play while being guided. My classes are small which allows more individual attention and focus.

I have taught children ages 4–14 in New York City public and private schools and currently, I teach seasonally at SUNY New Paltz.
